What is E-Invoicing?
E-invoicing is the process of creating, sending, receiving, and storing invoices in a structured digital format. It follows the EN16931 European standard and must be issued in Peppol-BIS format to ensure secure and automated transactions. Note : PDFs or traditional paper invoices do not qualify as e-invoices.

1. Structured Electronic Invoicing is Mandatory
From January 1, 2026, all VAT-registered businesses in Belgium must use structured electronic invoices for B2B transactions. These invoices must follow the EN16931 standard and be issued in Peppol-BIS format.

B2B invoices must be exchanged through the Peppol network to ensure secure transactions. If both parties do not agree on an alternative format that meets EN16931 then using Peppol will be mandatory.

Businesses must store electronic invoices for at least seven years as required by Belgian VAT regulations. Invoices must remain unchanged throughout the retention period.
